Defining my voice
I hope you'll allow me to think aloud for a moment. Lately I've been trying to figure out how to get an art business rolling. While I find the economy and targets easy enough, nailing down what my "mission" or values are is way more difficult. Uncovering my subconscious drives can be be a bit of a struggle for me, so I'll just throw some things out there for this one.
Starting at surface level. OK, I like pretty girls. I was once asked, "do you think all women should look like this?". The question really annoyed me because, of course not. That's not the point, is it? My motivation for drawing women the way I do is way simpler, and there's no agenda behind it. When I draw a pinup it's a simple aesthetic and fun thing to do. It's not a statement about the culture at large; it's just sexy and fun for the sake of it. Reductive mindsets are frustrating and a lot of people lack the ability to see things in the right context. Is the male gaze a problem in a broad sense? YES! Is it still OK in specific contexts? Sure! Humans are wired to find other pretty humans enjoyable. It's part of life and not an evil in itself. Don't overthink it. Don't underthink? Whatever.
Perhaps simplistic and obvious, but "fun" is essential in my creativity. I keep coming back to silly and sexy as the keywords, but I think I have an extra dimension to some of my art that is harder to define. My humor is subtle at times. I like to juxtapose a grim emotion with something goofy. My comics are usually frustrations expressed in an ironically silly way. I think they can be kinda poignant, and I'd like others to appreciate them too. Maybe there's some grit and a general fuck you to the state of society? I have a deep-rooted cynicism but at the same time people find me highly empathic and kind. There's a duality to me that I want to express. Lovingly punk maybe?
This is really difficult. It's scary because I feel like I need to pick a lane and give up on parts of my expression to be more streamlined. Consistency is not my jam.
I just wanna do my thing, man... leave me alone and subscribe.
